You Can Be Sew Helpful!
August 24th – August 27th
As you are aware, the wearing of a face covering is now mandated in Wisconsin. We have been contacted by school district social workers, serving homeless and low-income children in our listening areas, seeking homemade cloth masks for families they serve. With masks now on the back-to-school supply list, many of these students do not have access to them. If you’re interested in helping meet this need, see the list of participating school districts below and drop off your sewn masks at participating school district sites by August 24-27. YOU could be SEW Helpful in making this happen!
“My homeless families have so many things to worry about at this time. I would love donated masks for our students and families! I’ll take whatever I can get!” Elizabeth Webb, Green Bay Area School District McKinney-Vento (Homeless Student) Program Coordinator
“This is great news! It will be so helpful for our students and families who have limited access to face coverings!” -Kelsey Boge, Menasha Joint School District Social Worker
WHAT: Invitation to sew student-sized face masks for participating school districts in our listening areas.
What if schools go virtual? “There is definitely still a need for mask donations. This will be a critical part of preparedness when we return to in-person learning. Prior to the state-wide mask mandate, our district had laid out plans for masks to be required for all students for in-person learning as well as on school buses. Our students will continue to need masks even after the state mandate ends.” – Christi DeChamps, Appleton Area School District Social Worker.
HOW: There are lots of great patterns and “how-to” videos on-line. Both pleated or Olson (cup type) are fine. Pre-school through high school sizes needed.
Front: 100% unused and prewashed cotton fabric – no metallic fabrics

Elastic or Bias tape for fastening.

Before starting this project, please ask yourself the following questions:
In the past 14 days have you been in contact with anyone suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19?
Do you have fever, cough, or shortness of breath?
If you can answer “NO” to both questions, then proceed with making masks.
